Not going well (of course)

I’ve started another fic. I haven’t finished any (not counting the “Slice of Life” challenge and I’m not). This one has sort of a time travel theme. Kinda.

There are now about five fics, some almost finished, that need an ending. Seriously. I just can’t come up with something appropriate for any of them.

There’s always just shooting Janeway, of course, but I’ve done that a couple of times and it’s getting old.

I have the same problem sometimes. I have ideas for plots but no proper way to resolve them. Of course, then I get so wrapped up in trying to figure out out to resolve the story that I never get it written. I also shy away from other ideas I have because I don’t want to write strictly romance stories but I can’t figure out how to balance the romance and plot. I’d ask someone, but my one best friend doesn’t really get ‘Trek and the other tends to be a bit more silly than I can really write.

On another note, I adore your stories. The Slice of Life trio I even printed out so I can read them any time and I’m tempted to do the same with Bookends but it would take quite a bit of paper.

I’m so glad you enjoyed the Slice of Life stories! I had no idea when I saw slwatson’s challenge where they would lead, but I did have a good time writing them.

I agree completely about what you’ve said about resolving stories! That’s it exactly.

I’m at the stage with about three stories that is just about the end, but I just can’t bring myself to let the characters fall in each others arms and call each other “snookums”. I’d like them to be a bit believable (as believable as imaginary characters in a time traveling, space faring, alien battling story can be believable LOL).

And poor old Bookends. What a monster. It just never ended. LOL. But, it’s my first ever story (although Milk Run got published before it) and I admit I’m sentimental about it. But, yes, it is a bit long.

Thanks again for dropping by and commenting. Come back soon.

No, falling into each other’s arms and calling each other “snookums” doesn’t seem very in character for any characters I can immediately think of. Something more like a subtle aside while walking purposefully to their duties tends to fit the characters more (at least the ones I write for). But setting up and properly wording that aside seems pretty much impossible.

I love ‘Bookends’, particularly the part prior to them getting home, but that may be partially caused by my adverse reaction to anything relating to C/7 😀 Actually, I love the part where Gretchen muses that Janeway returned from the Delta Quadrant with a 20some daughter. The only return I like better is Seven bouncing on Janeway’s bed in ‘Fall From Grace’.

Do you have a site with stories to check out?
And thank you so much! I’m so happy to hear that you liked Bookends and Fall from Grace.
Ah, yes. The bed bouncing. Seven had great potential for comedy, especially once they get home – the whole fish out of water thing. I love Seven’s character, but she can’t have Chakotay (my only rule LOL).

I have a website but I’m embarrassed to share it — most of the stories on it were written when I was quite young (14 or so), so they lack what maturity I may have gained in the past 15 or so years. The most recent is ‘Divided Not Conquered’ and that was actually written about eight years ago though I’ve done some minor editing on it since then. Also, all stories on the site are X-Files or JAG. I’ve never felt confident enough about my Star Trek stories to actually post them anywhere on the web. Maybe that will change. I only hope that my stories (when posted) can give someone the pleasure yours give me.

I agree – Seven had great potential as either a ‘straight-man’ or a ‘Tommy Smothers’ type character. Unfortunately, her entire character has a pall cast upon it by TPTBs decision to put her with Chakotay at the end.

I know what you mean about posting stories. Even though it’s “anonymous” (kinda) it’s damned traumatic. When I posted Milk Run (my first posted story) I just about had a melt down. I think I did VAMB first before I got up the courage to do ffnet. Getting a beta helped me enormously as well since then though.

There were glimmers with Seven. I always wished I’d written “fun will commence now”. What a great line!

I look forward to those ST stories!

What is VAMB? I’m not familiar with that acronym. I’ve posted one story on FanFiction.net but didn’t get much of a response (only two reviews) and they didn’t seem very helpful, so I haven’t been inclined to post anymore. Mostly I post to Yahoo! groups, though I don’t really get a lot of input from there, either. I should probably use a beta more often than I do.

Who did get to pen the line ‘Fun will commence now’?

VAMB is Voyager Angel Message Board (I’d make that a link, but I don’t know how). There is a link to it under “My Links” though. It’s a predominantly J/C board and they’ve been very welcoming to me, even though I don’t get to visit it very often. It’s also THE place to find some really great J/C fic that’s not on ffnet.

As far as concrit type feedback goes, I don’t think you’ll get it at ffnet. I believe you’d get some on LiveJournal but I don’t really know as I don’t LJ (I find it a bit bewildering). I’ve had most of the feedback I’ve received on VAMB. It was they who turned my one shot “Slice of Life” challenge into a trilogy.

I can’t even remember what episode had the “fun will commence…” line, but it was a highlight for me. I think Seven was looking after all the Borg kids.

I liked the kiddie-Borg. I particularly find amusing the nicknames for them in fandom – Kinderborg, Borgettes, etc. I don’t think I’ve seen that episode yet – I lost track of the show after the third season when I went to college and I’m just now getting back to it.

I will definitely have to check out VAMB – it sounds fun.

I just re-read Fall From Grace and I have to say it’s growing on me. The first time I read it, I was so upset about you killing off Gretchen and Phoebe that I could never get into Kathryn’s mission. But re-reading it, I really like the interplay with Kathryn and the Doctor. I loved the part where she brought back the lewd music.

*Gulp.* Have you read “Baby On Board” yet? Don’t get too attached to Gretchen & Phoebe LOL. I just about had the people at VAMB in counseling with that one. And then I killed off Voyager in “Checkmate”. I have to put a “nobody dies” alert in my story synopsis now. The pair look like surviving all my current works in progress too, so no more trauma.

Yes, I’ve read them all now. Neither ‘Baby on Board’ nor ‘Checkmate’ are my favorites, of course, but they have spots that I read them for. Like I read ‘Fall from Grace’ for the bouncing Seven 🙂 ‘Baby on Board’ isn’t quite as heart-wrenching as ‘Fall from Grace’ since she actually got to spend some time with her family before they died, but it’s still painful. Your ‘nobody dies’ notes make me laugh.

I’ve killed people in fic before, usually one or the other of the protagonists, but they stay dead, unlike Janeway. Of course, both times I killed one of the protagonists, it was after they’d gotten together with their ‘soulmate’. I just aborted their ‘happily ever after’.
